Granny Square Afghan Tutorial

Crochet hook number 5. Yarn red heart. It is great yarn to use for your first time project. It is not expensive, and very easy to care. Here is a link to see the yarn.

Start with chain 6, join into a ring with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Chain three, equivalent of a double crochet stitch. Then make two double crochet into the center of the ring. Chain three, then make three double crochet into the center of the ring.
*Make three double crochet into the center of the ring, chain three, three double crochet in the same spot*.
Repeat * 2 more times, for a total of 4 groups of 3 double crochet. Then slip stitch into the top of the three chain to finish the round. First finished row on the picture below.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE COLORS: Simply cut yarn, tie with a new color. In the end of this tutorial I will teach you how to hide the knots.

Round 2: Creating first corner; Chain three, equivalent of a double crochet stitch, 2 double crochet, chain 3, and 3 double crochet into the same stitch.
Second corner. *Start with chain one, three double crochet, chain three, 3 double crochet into the same stitch*

Repeat * until you have a total of four corners.

Round 3: Change color if you like. Chain three, equivalent of a double crochet stitch, 2 double crochet, chain 1.

Work to form first corner. Three double crochet, chain three, 3 double crochet into the same stitch.
Chain one 1 double crochet, chain 1.

Second corner. Three double crochet, chain three, 3 double crochet into the same stitch.
Chain one 1 double crochet, chain 1.

Third corner. Three double crochet, chain three, 3 double crochet into the same stitch.
Chain one 1 double crochet, chain 1.
Fourth corner. Three double crochet, chain three, 3 double crochet into the same stitch.
Chain one, and join the round with a slip stitch.

Changing colors:
First pull in the knot that you need to hide, just like on the picture below. Using the same color of thread sew in, cut the edges (will show on video).
At this point you will never have bulky spots, squares are in perfect even shape, and your blanket will never Rip off in washer.

Non-sew method for joining Squares

Take a look at my video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_gJ_2nuc7o

Soon you will see how easy it is. Simply join squares as you go, on the last round.
Pictures below will show how to do it. When you understand you will never go back to long, boring sew in.
You can also ask me about video. It it much easier to show how that work, and you can stop anytime you need.

Triple crochett all over the sides to finish

Blocking

First method: Most crocheted items are stiff, and bulky when completed.
When you finish, leave a longer tail than 6 inches if you can. Weave in the yarn as far as you want and cut off the rest. The more you weave in, the more secure it will be and less likely to unravel.
Second method: Hide all the imperfect spots, by sewing them in. Cut the yarn close to the last stitch you wove under, and then pull the yarn just a little. This will draw up the yarn to make the end hide up under the last stitch, yhen sew the yarn with the same color of the thread, to make the end unvisible.
After that lay blanket flat on the towel, and wet it. Let it dry.

Your blanket doesn't have to fit in specific measurements.
Remember it should to be fun, so no stress, as long as it works for you it's great.
